2012 is going to end really soon and for this year, it has been one hell of a roller coaster ride. In that roller coaster ride, my friends rode along with me and never left me. But only 10 stood out. Who are they?

10. Michaela Nadine Pacis
Nadz was my classmate during my kindergarten and preparatory years. Well, this 2012, we had this one day that we bonded together; bonded together by passion – PHOTOGRAPHY. Yup. We’ve had a photowalk at SM Mall of Asia and we really had fun. I had first times though. It was my first time to do a photowalk with a friend at MOA, first time to eat at Sbarro, and lastly, first time at the MOA Eye which gave me chills whenever I look down below. Besides that, she’s always been a good friend to me. There are times that we’re badly bored and we would just meet up on a nearby restaurant. As usual, more stories to tell. She’s a great artist too, both in Photography and Digital Arts. YEY! Hope someday I will be as good as her. Mehehe.

9. Jan Cristine Lagman
Super Chin. She was the one who I always remind to guard her heart. (Please see Proverbs 4:23) Last year, we were super close. Like every love problem she had, I’m always there to help her cope up. But this year, I was the one who needed guidance. Glad she was there super late at night when I was in emotional pain. She remained the same. There was also a time that I invited her over to my school for a meet-up/snack and had a heart-to-heart talk. That time, we had our second photo together. (The first one on the campsite where I met her). Good thing she’s kinda supportive on where I am right now and likewise from me to her. “Even though I’m not the one, I’m here to stay to guard your heart and be your friend.”

8. Janna Patricia Jinahon
Janna is one of the most trusted in our barkada. She’s the smart one in our group. Ehehe. Most trusted. Why? I know some things are kept safe in her. Sometimes, we work in tandem when teasing our fellow kabarkadas. Nung time na may signs siya ng Dengue, hindi agad ako umuwi nun para alalayan siya (along with some of our classmates) papunta sa UST Hospital para magpa-check. Ayun. Hindi ko inaakala magiging ganung kami magiging friend talaga pero thankful ako kasi ang isang madiskarte like her, is one of my thesis mates. Ehehe. Thanks for being a good friend to me Janna!

7. Joanna Loise Culianan
Si Ate Loise. Siya ang CSC Treasurer and the one responsible kaya nasa CSC ako ngayon bilang layout artist nila. HAHA. Nakilala ko si ate Loise dahil kay Camille. Si Camille yung classmate ko and pinsan niya si ate Loise na tumakbo sa CSC for Treasurer. Anyways, she’s been so kind to me kaya naging comfortable ako to work for CSC. Sa una talaga kasi, I was hesitant but thanks for her warm treatment sa akin, na-enjoy ko ang pagiging part ng CSC and especially, my job. She helped me make my 2012 a blast! Salamat talaga sayo ate Loise!

6. Via Guerrero
Si Ate Via. Siya ang CSC Auditor at isa sa part ng cheering squad ko. Ay? Joke lang. Ehehe. Isa talaga siya sa nagpapamotivate sa akin to do my craft kasi yung pag-appreciate niya sa mga ginagawa ko ay isang motivation na para gawin ko pa ang best ko for CSC and of course, sa UST. Minsan, nag-open up na rin ako sa kanya sa mga ibang problems ko and I won’t forget that night kasi supportive siya and dun ko nalaman na pwede ko pala siya maging somewhat ka-close sa CSC. Thanks for everything ate V!

5. Cris Angelo Salazar
Si Cris yung PRO ng CSC and most of the orders na pinapagawa sa akin ay sa kanya nanggagaling. In fact, isa siya sa mga amazed sa akin dahil sa bilis ko daw gumawa ng posters. HAHA! Dahil sa kanya, natuto ako maging MARINO. Basta usapang lalaki, maayos naman siyang kausap and very understanding. Isa siya sa mga pinaka-close ko sa CSC kasi nakakabuo kami ng mga ideas para sa posters na gagawin and all at para sa ikabubuti ng CSC. Siya lagi contact ko pag may kailangang gawin. Kumbaga sa Creatives Team, sa kanya ako kumukuha ng utos. HAHA! Dapat kay Paulo kaso ito eh. Parang direct contact ako sa EB (Executive Board). Salamat sayo brader Cris!

4. Gizelle Sardea
Gizelle’s my churchmate in Economia at maituturing ko siyang isa sa mga pinaka-close ko sa church. Why? Madalas din heart-to-heart talk with her! HAHA! Kasi medyo parehas kami ng situation and nakaka-relate kami minsan sa pinagsasabi namin. Actually, inspiration ko yung bestfriendship nila ng best friend niya. Biruin mo? Long Distance ang pagiging mag best friend nila! Nasa kabilang parte ng mundo kasi yung best friend niya. Ang tagal na nilang mag best friend tapos ang tagal na rin nilang hindi nagkikita pero parang nandiyan lang sila para sa isa’t isa. AWWW. Sweet nila nuh? Sabi ko nga sa kanya, ideal ang pagiging mag best friend nila at parang model na sila for me. Ehehehe. True friend naman yang si Gizelle. Siyempre, always packed with Godly advice ang mga advises niya. HAHA! Salamat ulit Gizelle!

3. Katreena Pauline Alfonso
Si Kat. Isa siya sa mga forever seatmate o minsan ka-row ko sa klase. Makulit ‘to. HAHA! Minsan napaka-random ng usapan namin lalo na sa FB Chat. Well, isa din kasi ako sa mga pinaka-pinagkakatiwalaan sa klase eh. Lalo na sa debut niya kasi she trusted sa abilities ko and I was able to create an AVP and tarp (kahit super rush) for her. Kahit sa BBM nga ang daldal namin. Pinag-uusapan naming mga issues sa paligid naming and of course, school help. On personal things, minsan sa akin niya binubuhos ang sama ng loob niya on certain things. As a good friend, to the rescue naman ako. Ganun din naman siya sa akin eh. Marami akong hinihinging favors sa kanya although medyo nahihiya na ako pero maasahan talaga siya. Salamat Kat! Uy yung thesis natin ah?

2. Crystal Joy Bandiola
SF Ceej! (SF == Super Friend) Si Crystal ever since nasa college ako, close friend ko na yan. Galing niya din kasi mag-advice eh. Ilang ulit ko na rin siya pinag-uusapan dito sa Tumblr because of her kindness and she remains the same. HAHA! Super sipag niyan eh. Wala na akong ibang masabi pa kasi talagang bihira nalang talaga ang mga ganitong kaibigan. Kumbaga, ideal friend that everyone needs to have. Naks! Salamat sayo SF!

1. Bernice Pangan
Topping my list, saving the best for last is none other than my best friend, Bernice. Bebe for short nalang. HAHA! Marami akong natutunan this year because of her. Dito ko rin napatunayan na hindi basta basta masisira ang pagiging mag-bespren namin. Gaya ng paulit-ulit kong sinasabi dito, we’ve been through ups and downs pero ito pa rin kami, mag-bestfriend pa rin kami. We’ve both witnessed how good and great is our God! Actually, sa kanya ko nakita yun eh. Biruin mo, may mga times na nawawalan na siya ng pag-asa sa isang bagay pero si God talaga ang bait eh; binigyan siya ng pagkakataon. Hindi niya sinayang yun and look where she’s now. HAHA! Itong 2012, ang dami talagang events sa buhay ko with her. At times na naging masaya ako, nandun siya. Ganun din pag down ako. May mga times nga na minsan hindi kami nagkakaunawaan pero I learned the art of fixing it diplomatically. Promise, marami talaga akong natutunan sa kanya. I know how to value friendships even better. Ito rin ah. Marami akong first time experiences with her. First time ko mag-doodle, gumawa ng stop-motion video, kumain sa Yakimix at Tokyo Tokyo, magdamagang Skype, abutan ng lights out sa UST sa kaka-picture, light painting, rear curtain, multiple exposures to name a few. Basta masaya siyang kasama! We really enjoyed all these good times we had together, lalo na yung tinutulungan ko siya para sa plate niya. And oh, salamat nga pala bes for being with me sa Paskuhan. HAHA! Hayyy. Sana sa next year, mas magiging masaya kami and tumatag ang samahan namin. Ang haba na ng sinabi ko tungkol sa kanya oh well. Basta, yung best friend ko, BRAVE, ENTHUSIASTIC, RESPONSIBLE, NICE, INDUSTRIOUS, CARING, ENJOY kasama. Siya si BERNICE. Siya ang best friend ko. HAHAHA! Thank you for everything bespren! You are one of those people na thankful ako kay God kasi nakilala kita and blessing ka din kasi sa akin. Ayun. Ehehe. Woot.

I’m very thankful I met new friends. As for my old friends, thank you din kasi mas nag-level up friendship natin. Cheers to 2012!

So you’ve decided to study in UST eh? CONGRATULATIONS! You’re a Thomasian! :) Alam kong excited ka na para sa darating na pasukan. Marahil may iilan din na kinakabahan o kaya’y nahihiya. Sa ngayon, mag-aadjust ka na sa buhay kolehiyo and a very big part of that is the first few days of classes. So I’m going to share tips on how to deal with it based on my experience. :)

I’m a student of the Faculty of Engineering. Therefore, some tips may not apply on your respective colleges. But nevertheless, I hope it can help you.

DISCLAIMER: Based on my experiences ito. May vary depende sa college niyo. The views and opinions of the author does not necessarily state or reflect the University of Santo Tomas, its administrators and its faculty members.

1.) Reg Form.
Ito ang primary proof niyo na kayo ay nag-aaral sa UST. Dalhin ito palagi dahil matagal-tagal pa lalabas ang inyong ID. Ipakita kay manong guard sa pagpasok ng building para kayo’y papasukin. Pag first time niyong magkita ng inyong mga prof, ito agad ang hahanapin sa inyo. Pipirmahan niya ito at kukumpirmahin na ikaw ay naka-enroll para kunin ang subject na iyon sa prof na iyon. Hindi naman kailangang mag pa-xerox ka para sa kada subject. Baka sa PE kailangan ng xerox copy. BRING IT AT ALL TIMES. This will be your passport for the mean time sa mga iba’t ibang facilities ng UST.

2.) ‘Wag maligaw. Ask around.
Oo, malaki ang UST at kada building nito may mga sariling pasikot-pasikot. Pagpasok palang sa building niyo, siyempre diba hahanapin mo kwarto niyo. ‘Wag kang mahiya magtanong kay manong guard o sa mga ate at kuya natin. Ayaw naman natin na maging late sa 1st subject diba?

3.) Stand up. Make friends. Interact.
Yey! Nakapasok ka na ng classroom! Siyempre sa una, magiging tahimik ka talaga dahil hindi mo pa kilala ang mga blockmates mo. Make the first move. Introduce yourself to your new classmates. Have a little chat. Para sa mga nanggaling sa mga gender-exclusive schools, ‘wag kang mahiya sa pag-interact sa opposite sex. Malay mo, ang unang taong makikilala mo ay maaring maging bestfriend niyo in the future o di kaya’y kasintahan. Haha.

4.) Participate sa activities.
Sa amin kasi, ang mga student organization (org) ng respective major niyo ang magwewelcome sa inyo at magbibigay ng maikling orientation. Hindi mawawala ang mga icebreaker o kaya ang mga social games. Participate ka. Promise. Masaya ito at mas lalo mong makikilala ang mga kaklase mo. Memories can be quickly made here. Haha.

5.) First impression lasts.
Self-explanatory. Ito ang surely na tatatak sa isipan ng mga kaklase mo.

6.) Magpakitang-gilas sa mga skills mo.
Maraming activities ang USTe at ang inyong mga respective local student councils at orgs sa inyo. So kung may pagkakataon, ipakita mo ang husay at galing mo! Malay mo, ikaw ang magiging representative ng section mo para sa isang competition or event.

7.) No one leads? LEAD.
Madali na ito para sa mga may experience na naging isang student leader o kaya’y class president noong kayo’y nasa high school pa. Gaya ng number 6, ipakitang-gilas mo na marunong kang mamahala ng klase. They need someone to look up to. It might be you; baka ikaw na ang magiging class president. It’s a big responsibility yet with lots of priveleges.

8.) Meet the prof.
Wag kayong matakot sa prof niyo lalo na pag first time kayong i-meet. Interact with them. Malay mo, maging friends kayo diba? Haha. Pero wag sipsip ah?

9.) Be in an org.
Maraming student organizations (orgs) dito sa UST. Ranging from cultural, talent-oriented, course-oriented, interest-oriented and the like. Sa mga orgs na ito, maeenhance yung mga skills niyo. Gaya for example sa SITE (Society of Information Technology Enthusiasts), may mga programming/coding competitions para masubukan ang inyong mga natutunan. SITE is a college-based org sa Engineering exclusively for IT students. There are university-wide orgs like Salinggawi, if you really love to dance or be part of the well revered Salinggawi Dance Troupe na sumasali sa UAAP Cheerdance Competitions. REMEMBER, be part of orgs that are certified by the Office for Student Affairs (OSA).

10.) Be in the know.
Dapat may access for information ka palagi dahil karamihan sa mga announcements ay ginagawa by the last minute. Kung may FB, Tumblr, or Twitter account ang mga local student councils niyo, connect with them. Diyan kasi lalabas ang mga announcements lalo na sa class suspension. Siyempre, pwede rin kayong magtanong sa kanila. Kung may FB group naman ang org niyo, be part of it. Pwede kasi niyong tulungan ang isa’t-isa regarding sa mga lessons, announcements, and the like. Sa pagkakaalam ko, ang Central Student Council (CSC) ay may tinatawag na “CSC Infoblast.” Ito ang service ng CSC na magtetext sila sayo regarding sa mga announcements within UST; very useful siya lalo na sa panahon ng bagyo dahil sinasabi nila agad kung walang pasok. Magparegister kayo sa office ng CSC sa Tan Yan Kee building. Libre ito.

11.) Daming foods!
In and out of the University, ang daming kainan diyan. Kung gusto mong makamura, lumabas ka. :) Madaming kakainan diyan lalo na sa P. Noval area. Mang Tootz, Lopez Canteen, Coffee Indulgence ang ilan sa mga makikita mo doon. Basta sa paligid ng USTe, madami yan. Pero kung ikaw ay tinatamad na lumabas, marami namang kainan sa carpark. Meron ding kainan sa taas ng Main Building. Basta maraming foods dun! Pero iwasan natin ang styro ah? Alam kong pwedeng magrequest na hindi sa styro ilalagay ang food sa iilang establishments. Try niyo ding kumain sa lover’s lane kasama ang mga buddies. :)

12.) Mag-ingat sa labas.
Madami ring nangyayari sa labas ng campus na hindi maganda. JUST BE EXTRA CAREFUL. :) 

13.) Wear your ID at all times.
That is, pag naibigay na yung ID niyo. This will be your passport to the facilities in the University. But still have your reg form handy; in case something wrong happens.

14.) Thomasian Welcome Walk
Ito ang ceremony ng UST para sa pagwelcome ng lahat ng Freshmen. This includes the rite ng pagpasok sa Arch of the Centuries (pero wag kang lalabas ah) and the mass. Party afterwards. :)

15.) Makinig sa Campus Tour!
Ililibot kayo ng mga ate’t kuya sa UST. Feel free to ask them kung may particular story or belief about that place.

16.) Be prepared.
Lalo na sa first time niyong mameet ang profs niyo. You’ll be needing 1x1 and/or 2x2 ID pictures (depende sa prof), index cards (SIZE and COLOR may vary depende sa prof), and yellow pad.

17.) Be protected… from the weather.
Weather is always unpredictable. So make sure to ALWAYS BRING AN UMBRELLA! Pati na rin slippers siguro in case bumaha. Umbrella is a must. Self-explanatory.

18.) Bring a jacket… kahit mainit sa labas.
Depende kasi sa classroom niyo. Meron kasing classroom na sobrang lamig at meron din namang hindi. Hahaha.

19.) Pumasok sa consultation day.
Ewan ko lang kung ang ibang colleges may ganito or anything similar to this. This happens after the semester. Dito niyo pwede tanungin ang mga prof niyo kung ano na estado niyo lalo na sa grades. It helps, lalo na kung magagawan pa ng paraan para ipasa kayo. At least dito, malalaman mo ung mga deficiencies niyo sa subject na yun. Dito kadalasan nag-aappeal ang students. :)

20.) ‘Wag na ‘wag kang magiging absent sa PASKUHAN.
Paskuhan, one of the happiest nights ng UST sa buong academic year. Dito may free food, live bands, at fireworks display. Basta party-party mode dito! :))

21.) Paskuhan Tip: Plan ahead.
Plan your default meet-up ahead of time. Dahil sa sobrang hirap ng pagtetext sa UST ng time na yan, it will take about 30-45 minutes for you to receive the text message. Super congested ang networks!

22.) Paskuhan Tip: Don’t be alone.
Never spend Paskuhan alone! ahahaha. :) Bring a friend or be with your classmates. Nakakabato talaga pag wala kang kausap. Magdala at maglatag na rin kayo ng lumang tarpaulin o kaya mat para pwede kayong umupo o humiga sa Lover’s Lane.

23.) Iwasan ang pag-absent.. pati ang cutting.
You might miss quizzes at lectures na napaka-vital. Lalo na pag major subject pa naman yun. Para na din ma-avoid ang pagiging FA. (Failure due to absences)

24.) Appreciate Nature.
Tambay ka muna sa Botanical Garden. Puro halaman ang nandoon… Ang serene ng kasi ng lugar. Pwedeng pwede ang Lover’s Lane!

25.) Have friends from the higher batch.
Make friends with them. Makakatulong sila lalo na pag may kinailangan kang libro for your subject. You can always ask them about certain things regarding sa procedures ng enrollment, pre-sectioning, at iba pa.

26.) Try buying second hand books.
It saves you money. Kadalasan sponsor niyan ang mga student councils. You may also buy your friend’s books if parehas kayo ng book.

27.) Exam permit.
Never forget this. Your Prelim and/or Final exams may not be credited.

28.) University-wide WiFi zone.
Have a device capable of wifi connectivity? Log on to wifi.ust.edu.ph and have your device registered. You need your reg form for this. And oh, blocked ang social networking sites dito.

29.) UST Publishing House.
Some professors require you to buy books sa UST Publishing House. Nasa tabi siya ng Beato Angelico Building (CFAD/Arki Building). Agahan ang pagpila kasi parang blockbuster ang pila doon.

30.) Walang prof?
Sa amin sa Engineering, meron daw “15 minute rule.” Pag 15 minutes na at wala pa ring prof, pwede nang tumakas. NO. It’s not always the case AND, sariling gawa lang ang rule na ‘to. :)) Pag walang prof, pumunta ka sa Faculty Room to make sure na absent si prof. Pag wala, you can do whatever you want until the time for that class ends. Magkwentuhan muna kayo, harutan, tawanan, at iba pa. WAG LANG MAG-INGAY! May nagkaklase sa kabilang rooms.

31.) AIM FOR UNO!
‘Wag lang puro Tres. hahaha. Pag-igihan ang pag-aaral dahil ang mga grades na yan ay lalabas sa inyong transcript. Pogi points yan sa paghahanap ng trabaho pag mataas grades mo diba? hahaha. Wag naman Tres… LALO NA SINGKO. Please. Kung aspiring Dean’s Lister ka, dapat Semestral Average mo ay 1.75 and above. .001 can affect you. Ipagpatuloy lang yan at baka maging Cum Laude ka pag-graduate mo.

32.) PASS!
Pass your subjects para maging regular ka sa succeeding semesters. Mahirap po ang buhay irreg; ikaw pa gagawa ng sarili mong schedule. Iwasan din natin sana mag-summer classes. This will be your last few years of summer vacation tapos nasa school ka’t nag-aaral?! Pass. :)

33.) Most importantly… COMMON SENSE.
Kailangan na kailangan talaga yan. Lalo na sa announcements. You can’t survive college without common sense. Magbasa maigi ng instructions at announcements nang hindi malito.

Anyway, sana makatulong ito sa inyo. College life is a big thing pero as you go along, maiintindihan niyo na ang pasikot-sikot ng buhay na ito. Medyo close to reality na ito… You’ll be meeting almost all kinds of people; you have to learn to deal with them. Ayun lang. Happy Studying! Go USTe!
